A lot of people wonder, I know I used to, just what exactly do schizophrenics see and hear.
I think its easiest to describe by a comparison to normal perception and then adding elements on top of that.
So, if you consider normal perception for a moment, there’s the environment, and your own internal thoughts, feelings and motivations.
In schizophrenia, in addition to that normal baseline of perception there is another layer of perception on top of that. So, for example, in addition to ones own internal motivations, there may be external motivators, like the feeling of a will moving, or impelling you to move.
In addition to your own internal perception, there may be external perceiver(s), like a deity or spirit.
And, in addition to the environment, well, it’s difficult to find the word, but its easy to describe. I suppose you could call it a metaphysical environment, though its not metaphysics proper. For example, you might see something like aura on a person.
If its difficult to imagine, the best modern comparison I can find is not virtual reality, but augmented reality.
Here’s an example:
If you look in this video you can see the woman is engaging with a layer of reality on top of the normal environment and I think that is a very good approximation of what schizophrenic sight looks like. In it, you can see her interacting, with what would be metaphysical objects in the environment.
Overall, I’d say the best term to describe schizophrenic sight would be supernatural, not because of the spiritual connotations, as the term applies equally to non religious hallucinations, but because, in perception, it literally happens above the natural.
