Something happened back in the 90s that was pretty spectacular. Creationists again started to challenge Evolution and they were gaining significant momentum in the public sphere.
But then biologists did something never before seen in civic discourse. They declared that there weren’t two sides to the matter. The issue had been resolved, the debate wasn’t real, and one side weren’t ‘worth listening to’ altogether.
And I’ll tell you, they were right.
Creationism was never science, Evolution was never in doubt, and there was no legitimate discourse to be had.
But they opened the door.
And I imagine people wondered, “If there aren’t two sides to this debate, what other discussions don’t have two sides.”
And quietly, and surely, many other groups crept in with the same proclamation. always saying, one and the same, in some words or another, ‘That this matter has been resolved thoroughly, and is not subject to debate.”
Now that this door is open, there is really no way to close it, because it implies something extremely important.
That truth exists, and its not a matter of discussion. That truth is not just opinions, or an argument, or a point of view. It just exists.
That’s as scary as it is exciting, and it invites all kinds of claimants to the truth from every corner of society, ready to proclaim, ‘that this matter is not up for discussion’, it’s been resolved, it’s finalized.
But now that the door has been opened, I doubt anyone will find a way to shut it, or that we should even if we could.
