Taking the perceiver into our own hands, we’ve said that before. That taking the perceived into our own hands, results in science, but that taking the perceiver into our own hands results in religion.
One of the ways we do that is by ritual.
The idea behind ritual is relatively simple. That if if we perform certain actions or behaviors consistently, we can ensure our perception of those experiences remains the same.
Ritual is something of a natural inclination. The athlete who always ties his shoes the same way before an event. the actor who always says a toast before going on stage.
But religion takes this inclination and elevates it to a discipline and practice, taking it beyond natural inclination, and into a different realm altogether.
